Graeme Hopkins is a Registered Landscape Architect, Registered Architect and Research Fellow in the Zero Waste Centre for Sustainable Design & Behaviour at the University of South Australia. He is principal of Fifth Creek Studio, and since the 1980s he has developed expertise in WSUD design and implementation, and the use of landscape strategies and natural systems within urban environments to provide climate change adaptation, with a particular focus on micro climate modification through the use of living architecture technologies such as green roofs and walls. He received a Churchill Fellowship in 2005 to study green roofs and walls overseas.
His book Living Architecture: Green roofs and walls (co-authored with Christine Goodwin) was published by CSIRO Publishing in mid-2011. Fifth Creek Studio was awarded the AILA South Australia Medal for Landscape Architecture 2012-13 for the book. He is currently conducting research into the heat impact of various landscape materials for landscape on structure and its effect on micro climate for North Sydney Council. Previously he completed three research and monitoring projects funded jointly by the South Australian government and Aspen Development: a living wall feasibility study for Adelaide’s climate, an innovative hybrid living wall system designed by Fifth Creek Studio and Woods Bagot for multi-storey buildings; and green roof trials to enable the development of an insulation performance tool for particular use in hot dry climates. The Joinery - Watch This Space.
The Joinery, the new community environment space located at the old bus station at 111 Franklin Street, is already starting to feel like home for the groups based there, but every good home needs a great outdoor space!
Adelaide Sustainable Building Network ran a one day design/build workshop to activate and beautify the area outside our Bowen Street entrance.
Over the last few months, working with lots of volunteers and groups, the vision for The Joinery’s outdoor space has gone from aspirational to feasible, and now we are ready to turn it into reality.
This practical, outcomes focused day will begin to creatively transform the outside space into a green oasis in the heart of the city.

Rachel Catt: Loft on Seventh - Bowden Village
Rachel Catt walks us through 'Loft on Seventh' at Bowden Village, South Australia's first 5 Star Green Star townhome projects. The notion of ‘elegant frugality’ is the idea of doing things economically but beautifully. This notion permeates through the Loft on Seventh terraces, picking up on the industrial forms and materials of the historically industrial area within which it sits and re-interpreting them in innovative ways, creating unexpected space and luxury.
Rachel Catt:
Rachel joined Williams Burton in early 2012 after returning from nearly five years in London working for the highly acclaimed architectural firm Allies and Morrison.
She played an integral role in the delivery of the both 'Loft on Seventh' and 'Gibson & 7th' developments for Systembuilt at the Bowden Life More Interesting site coordinated by Renewal SA.

Des Menz - The Value of Water
Water is a precious resource. This sentiment should ring mighty in the South Australian context, especially as it is known as the 'driest state in the driest country'. As we are heading toward our hot and dry season, our upcoming AdelaideSBN event will look to bring water into focus, and how our built environments can help us optimise the value of water.
Presenter, Des Menz, takes us on a short journey into areas that he has been involved in for the past 17 years - wastewater and treated water management.
Des Mens - Des calls himself an old geezer engineer, although as a young engineer once, he thought he’d never become an old geezer.
He began his professional career as a railway engineer in Port Augusta, moved into municipal engineering for a period of 10 years (in SA and Victoria), and by 1989 decided he had had enough of being an employee and jumped ship to start his own consulting business.
This was in the thriving region around Cobram, Victoria. In 1997 he relocated back to South Australia, based himself in Clare, and began the struggle all over again to eke out a living from a smaller economy and far fewer people than he experienced in Victoria.
As a sole operator in a country town, there’s no such thing as being a specialist. And so, Des had to become educated in many different areas of his profession. The most satisfying has been in the environmental management arena, at both the community scale and the household scale.
