How to interpret and apply AS 4970 Protection of Trees on Development Sites 2009
Date:
Tuesday, November 6, 2018 - 17:00 to 19:00
Event:
W.A. Events
Presenter:
Arbor Centre
Venue:
Engineers Australia WA, Auditorium, 712 Murray Street, West Perth WA 6005
Synopsis:
At a time when we are losing urban trees at a rapid rate, often unnecessarily, the Australia Standard AS 4970 - Protection of Trees on Development Sites - 2009, can provide a powerful tool for initiating and guiding, the tree retention process. This AS 4970 presentation is targeted at a more executive, decision making level (for those in roles such as Planners, Engineers, Architects, Landscape Architects and Parks managers etc.) and is formulated to provide; • A broad overview of AS 4970; what it models; what it actually says; and the staged process it recommends for tree retention; and • An overview, and examples of how to manage the tree retention process, from planning and decision making, through to implementation. Over all, the aim of the presentation is to equip participants, with a broad understanding of how to utilise this Australian Standard AS 4970, to support the successful retention of worthwhile trees in the urban environment. This should; • increase participant understanding of the tree retention process; and • Increase participant capacity to ask the right kind of questions, at the right times. About the speaker: Charlie Firth joined Arbor Centre in 2016 to work with its Consultancy division. Previously, he was employed as Coordinator of Horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne where he was responsible for scheduling and coordinating external contractors and a team of full time staff to conduct a wide range of horticultural and Arboricultural works within the garden and surrounding parkland. Further to the knowledge and experience gained through being the Coordinator of Horticulture at Cranbourne Gardens, Charlie has continued to further his knowledge base through completing studies at Melbourne University, by attaining the QTRA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification and by attending multiple seminars and conferences interstate. Charlie continues to grow and apply this combination of practical of knowledge and experience with, his substantial technical Arboricultural skill, making him a highly accomplished and valued professional in his field.

This presentation will provide a succinct summary of PFAS chemistry, where to expect these compounds to be present, and the current limitations in assessment methodologies that feed into management decision making. This presentation will also question the validity of conventional approaches to managing this complex and high profile contaminant.
Implementation of EEI - Anammox process for wastewater treatment
Date:
Wednesday, June 20, 2018 - 17:00
Event:
W.A. Events
Presenter:
Dr Raj Kurup PhD FIEAust CPEng NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus) GAICD - CEO, Environmental Engineers International Pty Ltd (EEI)
Venue:
Engineers Australia WA Auditorium 712 Murray Street West Perth
Synopsis:
DATE & TIME: Wednesday 20 June 2018, 5.00pm for 5.30 pm start TICKETS (incl. GST): SEng & EA Members & Students FREE, Non-members $30 Across Australia and in other parts of the world, nitrogen removal has become an essential process of wastewater treatment. The conventional method of nitrogen removal - the nitrification and denitrification pathway requires substantial oxygen transfer (approximately 4.3 g of O2 for each g of ammonia-N) and carbon (about 4 g/g of NO3–N reduced). In the case of low carbon, high nitrogen wastewater, the addition of an external carbon source is required during the denitrification stage to effectively convert nitrate to nitrogen gas. These escalate the cost of the conventional nitrogen removal process, and utilities and industry have been looking for alternative low-cost nitrogen removal technologies. Some of the recent innovations in nitrogen removal include the anammox process, and struvite precipitation (precipitation of ammonium and phosphate as MgNH4-PO4, with the addition of magnesium salt if needed). This presentation discusses the retrofitting of the anaerobic ammonia oxidation process (anammox) by Environmental Engineers International Pty Ltd (EEI) to an existing abattoir wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Western Australia. Abattoir wastewater requires advanced treatment prior to discharge to the environment due to its high nitrogen content. Since the implementation of the EEIAnammox process over the past two years, the WWTP has consistently achieved good nitrogen removal, without any extra carbon addition. The plant is monitored online for various parameters to ensure its effective operation. The WWTP has achieved over 20% savings in overall electrical power since the implementation of the anammox process. Unlike the European case studies, the WWTP has achieved over 95% TN reduction even during the winter months when the temperature has fallen below 15oC.

The Perth Wave Energy Project - Design and Construction Update
Date:
Monday, September 22, 2014 - 17:30
Event:
W.A. Events
Presenter:
Jonathan Fiévez - Chief Technology Officer, Carnegie Wave Energy
Venue:
Auditorium, Engineers Australia, 712 Murray Street, West Perth
Synopsis:
The project employs three 5th generation CETO wave energy converters to feed the onshore power station where hydraulic energy is converted to zero emission electrical power. Australia’s largest naval base and the 4000 people serving there ensure the island has a thirst for power as well as fresh water, which the project also provides through its pilot, wave powered desalination plant. The CETO 5 converter itself has a unique design that has been developed over a number of years by Carnegie’s world class engineering team and in-house computational modelling capability. Many components however have their heritage in offshore oil and gas applications and Carnegie is working with some of the world’s leading suppliers to adapt their technology to CETO.
