Shaping a Better World
Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Arup’s Integrated Environment Group is headquartered in Brisbane and provides sustainability services covering carbon and climate change, environmental impact assessment, sustainability strategy and policy.

This presentation will highlight the learnings and experiences taken from Arup’s recent implementation of an on-line Energy and Emissions data management system for capturing, analysing and reporting the greenhouse gas emissions associated with activities under the operational control of Cairns Regional Council.

The Cairns Region encompasses 4135 km2 of land on a narrow coastal strip between the Great Dividing Range and the Coral Sea. The region is part of Australia’s Wet Tropics and is framed by the lush World Heritage listed Wet Tropics rainforest to the west and north and the Coral Sea and World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to the east.

These attributes make the region a world renowned destination, and at the same time illustrate the regions climate vulnerability.

Cairns Regional Council is committed to making the region Australia’s greenest.

Presenter: Matt Kluck - Project Manager, Arup.

Matt is a Project Manager in the Integrated Environment Group at Arup. He is responsible for implementing and maintaining systems that manage energy and emissions capture, analysis and reporting in corporations and government.

Over the past 15 years, Matt has worked extensively on system implementation projects, primarily focused upon achieving operational efficiencies in large scale supply chain operations. He has worked on systems projects at wineries in the Barossa Valley helping reduce forklift usage, at breweries in Melbourne helping reduce the number of kilometres travelled by trucks shipping beer around the country, and at Myer warehouses in three states helping reduce truck waiting times.

More recently, Matt’s focus has narrowed from helping organisations reduce greenhouse gas emitting activities, to implementing more sophisticated ways of measuring the impacts of their emitting activities. Most recently, Matt’s work at Arup has included leading the development and implementation of an Energy and Emissions Reporting System for the Cairns Regional Council.
