The development of coal seam gas (CSG) has proceeded very rapidly over the last few years, with four companies active in the Western Downs area of South West Queensland.
The Cumulative Socioeconomic Impacts research project, based in the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining in UQ’S Sustainable Minerals Institute, is examining the cumulative impacts – positive and negative - of the four CSG companies on communities, with Miles the pilot town.
To date, they have identified impact areas such as housing, employment and business, education and training, community wellbeing and governance. The team are currently selecting salient and credible indicators of impact, in collaboration with government, industry and the community.
Vikki Uhlmann is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working on this project and she will give an overview of the project and some of its more detailed findings.
(Note: Other research projects are examining impacts on agriculture, water, health and community resilience.)
