Dr Raj Kurup delivered a fascinating presentation about the award-winning anammox process technology that his company, Environmental Engineers International Pty Ltd (EEI), has developed for treating high nitrogen effluent streams. WA SENG wishes to thank Dr Kurup for his time and inspiring contribution to sustainable engineering practice. August event: PFAS: Sustainable Management and Remediation Managing Director & Principal Environmental Scientist of Western Environmental Pty Ltd, James Gibson will be presenting “PFAS: Sustainable Management and Remediation” on Thurs 30 August 2018 (5:30pm start, with refreshments 6:30-7pm) at the WA Engineers Australia auditorium. James will provide a succinct summary of PFAS chemistry, where to expect these compounds to be present, and the current limitations in assessment methodologies that feed into management decision making. James will also discuss the: Current state and national framework for PFAS assessment and management. Risk drivers for remediation and management. An overview of current PFAS treatment technologies and management options and their overall sustainability. Register HERE. Upcoming Events Asbestos Training Workshop 17 September 2018, 5:30pm for a 6pm start to 7pm Auditorium, WA Engineers Australia, 712 Murray St West Perth A joint event with the Construction Panel, WA SENG and Risk Engineering Society, this presentation will by Aurora Environmental will increase member’s knowledge and awareness of asbestos identification and risk assessments. Enviro Drinks 6 September 6, 2018, 5:30 PM - LateWolf Lane, 321 Murray Street, Perth WA 6000 An "Enviro Drinks" event has been arranged for Perth, providing a networking platform across the whole environmental industry. The event is hosted by the Australasian Land & Groundwater Association (ALGA) in collaboration with Australian Contaminated Land Consultants Association (ACLCA), Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) and Environmental Consultants Association (ECA). Regiser here Arbor Centre WA Presentation: Protection of Trees on Development Sites October/November 2018 Auditorium, WA Engineers Australia, 712 Murray St West Perth At a time when we are losing urban trees at a rapid rate, often unnecessarily, the Australia Standard AS 4970 - Protection of Trees on Development Sites - 2009, can provide a powerful tool for initiating and guiding, the tree retention process. This AS 4970 presentation by Charlie Firth of the Arbor Centre Pty Ltd is targeted at a more executive, decision making level (for those in roles such as Planners, Engineers, Architects, Landscape Architects and Parks managers etc.) and is formulated to provide: A broad overview of AS 4970; what it models; what it actually says; and the staged process it recommends for tree retention; An overview, and examples of how to manage the tree retention process, from planning and decision making, through to implementation. Over all, the aim of the presentation is to equip participants, with a broad understanding of how to utilise this Australian Standard AS 4970, to support the successful retention of worthwhile trees in the urban environment. This should: increase participant understanding of the tree retention process and; Increase participant capacity to ask the right kind of questions, at the right times. Note - if there are any aspects that you would like the presentation to focus on, please let us know at info@seng.org.au SCINEMA International Science Film Festival 2018 During the month of August, the Australia’s Science Channel is presenting the “SCINEMA” International Science Film Festival. SCINEMA is the largest science film festival in the southern hemisphere, celebrating international science-related drama and documentary films. SCINEMA 2018 provides FREE screenings of amazing films about the human body and movement, energy and transport, environment and nature, health and medical, space and astronomy, innovation and technology, which you can watch in the comfort of your own home or arrange a workplace screening. The Environment Program comprises of the films “Grassroots”, “Nature Calls”, “Planet Earth II: Grasslands”, and the “The Kingdom: How Fungi Made Our World”. These are recommended for nature and environment enthusiasts who wants to witness the beauty of our world, as well as those making an effort to understand and preserve it. Linc Energy directors face criminal charges Five directors of the now-liquidated Linc Energy have been criminally charged and face up to 5 years jail for actions that may be summarised as ecological vandalism undertaken for commercial reasons. Green economy reaches 6% of global listed equity market The chief executive of FTSE Russell has declared the green economy now holds a share of the global equity market that is equivalent to the oil and gas economy, as they increase and decrease, respectively. California is Exceeding its Emissions Targets Greenhouse gas pollution levels have been reduced to 1990 levels ahead of its 2020 deadline and its Carbon Intensity is down 38% from 2001 levels. Scotland Breaking Renewables Records According to WWF Scotland, energy harvested from wind turbines over 6 months in 2017 produced enough electricity to fulfil the entire nation’s power demands for six days. Two huge solar farms for NSW German renewable energy giant Innogy will soon begin construction of two solar farms in NSW expected to contribute 460MW to the power grid. Find out more here. Update on Engineers Australia's Environmental College Board WA SENG Division's co-chairs, Michelle North and Patrick Coffey are also members of the Environmental College Board of Engineers Australia. Michelle and Patrick attended the College's annual face-to-face board meeting on 29 May 2018 in Sydney. The Environmental College is working with SENG to promote awareness, advocate for positive change, and provide training and knowledge to all engineers and environmental professionals to implement sustainable solutions. At the May 2018 board meeting, the College reviewed its strategic plan and discussed the development of a training presentation to highlight the importance of sustainability and the urgency for action. SENG and the Environmental College were heavily involved in the development of Engineers Australia's Climate Change and Sustainability Polices and it is worth re-familiarising yourselves with them here.
