The Water Corporation is working on a number of options to secure water supplies to meet increased demand due to population growth and a drying climate in Western Australia. Groundwater replenishment is one of these options. Groundwater replenishment is the process by which secondary treated wastewater undergoes further, advanced treatment to produce water that is of drinking water quality and suitable for recharge to groundwater. This has the potential to supplement Perth’s drinking water supplies. Recharge of recycled water began in November 2010 and will continue until the end of 2012 to test whether groundwater replenishment is a viable option for Perth.
