When registering, delegates were given the option to offset the environmental impact of their conference attendance. Pangolin Associates Pty Ltd has estimated the average attendee carbon footprint to be 2 tCO2-e. For $20+gst they offset this through the retirement of two carbon credits from a wind power project in Tamil Nadu (India), and also fund two trees through Trees For Life’s Trees For Carbon program.
About the carbon credits from the wind power plant in Tamil Nadu:
This credit funded the implementation of a grouped wind power project in Tamil Nadu, India, co-ordinated by Tamil Nadu Spinning Mills Association. The project was intended to meet the power requirements of small and medium textile mills in the area. In the absence of the project, the equivalent amount of electricity would have been generated by the power plants connected with the southern grid, India which is predominantly based on fossil fuel.
Details can be found on the Verified Carbon Standard database.

About Trees For Life’s Trees For Carbon program:
The Trees For Carbon program funds new trees planted locally in plantings protected for 30 years. They work on the estimate that 5 trees will absorb one tonne of carbon over their lifetime; however, these are not verified credits.
All Trees For Life carbon plantings aim to replicate local native forests and are not intended for any future clearance. They aim to create dynamic sustainable native forests that will remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and provide multiple environmental benefits.
More information can be found on the Trees For Life website.
