Speaker: Dr Brad Pettitt, Mayor of the city of Freemantle
Technologies for a sustainable future –
linking local with global
New technologies will play a vital and ever increasing role in creating a more sustainable planet. Dr Pettitt will outline some of the key emerging technologies that will transform our cities and our nation as we seek to be more energy efficient and less carbon intensive in the future. From grid-connected electric vehicles, to zero-carbon buildings and ‘green’ roofs and walls, the 21st century will need to look very different to the last century if the climate challenge is to be met.
The address will also look at other technological solutions to climate change that are currently being debated - from small and large scale renewable energy initiatives to geo-engineering solutions to climate change. While some of these technologies have the potential to create problems that are greater than the problem they seek to solve, the debate over their relative merits is nonetheless likely to be one of the most important debates over coming decades.
With his background in sustainability and role as mayor of a thriving modern city, Dr Pettitt has a unique insight into both the need for change and the economic and social barriers that currently exist.
