Antarctica: tiny algae turning snow green 'could create new ecosystem' – video

The Guardian - Thu, 2020-05-21 18:56

Antarctica is  turning green due to the climate crisis and the phenomenon is potentially offering sustenance to other species, according to the first large-scale algae map of the peninsular by University of Cambridge scientists.

The map identifies 1,679 separate blooms of green snow algae, which together cover an area of 1.9 sq km, equating to a carbon sink of about 479 tonnes a year. This is equivalent to the emissions of about 875,000 petrol car journeys in the UK, though in global terms it is too small to make much of a difference to the planet’s carbon budget

Our environment has always affected our mortality, should we add climate change to death certificates? | Arnagretta Hunter

The Guardian - Thu, 2020-05-21 15:16

As temperatures rise we predict increasing morbidity and mortality, particularly in the climate-vulnerable parts of northern Australia

Last summer was bad for our health. We breathed hazardous air, watched our rivers dry up, lived in towns without water, suffered through scorching heat with record-breaking temperatures, and many people survived intense experience of fire.

Yet our death records for 2020 won’t record this. Death certificates will reflect the heart attacks or lung failure, the injuries and the organ failure that occur at the end of life. They do not record the environmental factors that contribute to these fatal events.
