The number of mountain hares on moorlands in the eastern Scottish Highlands has fallen to less than 1% of the level recorded more than 60 years ago, according to a long-term study.

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and the RSPB teamed up to study counts of the animals over several decades on moorland managed for red grouse shooting and nearby mountain land.

Dr Raj Kurup delivered a fascinating presentation about the award-winning anammox process technology that his company, Environmental Engineers International Pty Ltd (EEI), has developed for treating high nitrogen effluent streams. WA SENG wishes to thank Dr Kurup for his time and inspiring contribution to sustainable engineering practice. August event: PFAS: Sustainable Management and Remediation Managing Director & Principal Environmental Scientist of Western Environmental Pty Ltd, James Gibson will be presenting “PFAS: Sustainable Management and Remediation” on Thurs 30 August 2018 (5:30pm start, with refreshments 6:30-7pm) at the WA Engineers Australia auditorium. Regiser here Arbor Centre WA Presentation: Protection of Trees on Development Sites October/November 2018 Auditorium, WA Engineers Australia, 712 Murray St West Perth At a time when we are losing urban trees at a rapid rate, often unnecessarily, the Australia Standard AS 4970 - Protection of Trees on Development Sites - 2009, can provide a powerful tool for initiating and guiding, the tree retention process. This AS 4970 presentation by Charlie Firth of the Arbor Centre Pty Ltd is targeted at a more executive, decision making level (for those in roles such as Planners, Engineers, Architects, Landscape Architects and Parks managers etc.) and is formulated to provide: A broad overview of AS 4970; what it models; what it actually says; and the staged process it recommends for tree retention; An overview, and examples of how to manage the tree retention process, from planning and decision making, through to implementation. London Assembly call for bins to be placed in men’s toilets so items that could cause blockages are not flushed away

Men using public toilets in London may soon be confronted with an unusual new arrival in their cubicles.

Sanitary bins, familiar for years in female loos, are poised to be introduced into male conveniences in an attempt to cut down on fatbergs in the capital’s sewers, if Greater London Assembly members have their way. Men use wet wipes too, as well as other products that can clog the sewers if they are flushed, not binned.

National Farmers’ Federation says US court ruling that weedkiller causes cancer sets a ‘reckless precedent’

Australia’s National Farmers’ Federation has rejected the finding of a US court that the weedkiller Roundup causes cancer, saying it set a “reckless precedent” that could harm agriculture.

On Monday, Greenpeace urged the Australian government to start restricting the sale of Roundup – which is widely available in supermarkets and hardware stores – after a Californian court found it caused the cancer of a terminally ill man.
